Test-Drive Meme: September 2012

This meme serves as a practice ground for both new and old players of Somarium to both get used to voicetest characters they may choose to play in the upcoming application cycle. Potential applicants are more than welcome to join in on the fun. It works like any open meme and the rules are simple.

1. Post with your character and their name and canon on the subject line.

1. Looks like the Ob Holm bazaar is having a sale. There's a few interesting trinkets here and there but maybe you need a little help deciding what to buy.

2. The dreamgate isn't accessible for the return trip back from Endouto to Ob Holm so it looks like you're stuck for a couple of days. Maybe it's time you gather some supplies or explore the area.

3. Someone just stole something off of you! Quick! Call for help or chase after them!

4. You know what's a good thing about that resort in Ob Holm? It's got a pretty cool oasis to chill at. Talk about a five star vacation.

5. Somehow you're taking a trip on Cid's airship over the desert. Whether to Somarium, Ob Holm or Endouto is up to you!

6. Reroll or go crazy and make something up!

[Shiki catches the attention of the merchant. She smiles, putting on the charm.]

How much is this?

What Rhyme witnesses next is a quick-fire exchange of lowering prices. The merchant was a stubborn man, however, Shiki proved to be a worthy adversary.]

[spaztastic]

[Shiki panted, frowning at the merchant while giving him her best withering look.]

Fine! We'll take our business elsewhere!

[Putting her hand on Rhyme's shoulder and steering her away from the stand.]

Let's go Rhyme.

[And they're walking! /o/]

You really wanna see 'em? [He sounds really excited for a second.]

I was thinkin' that they might be stuff that yo— [And he catches his mistake before he is able to say the entire word. Beat averts his eyes to the ground.] Stuff that my sister might like.

You don't. Not for certain at least. [Peggy isn't a monster, don't worry.] You'll just have to trust me.

Huh?

[Rhyme blinks as she's steered away from the stall, but obediently follows Shiki's lead of course. She wonders if this is a haggling tactic or if Shiki's really given up on the item. She looks as if the merchant had really made her mad.]

Oh...

[Rhyme doesn't think they'll be able to bring the items home to his sister, but doesn't have the heart to tell Beat. Not while he looks so excited just talking about them. Although she wonders what's wrong when he suddenly turns his eyes away, she just smiles widely and encouragingly at him when he looks at her again.]

Of course I want to! Where are they?

[spaztastic]

[She drops her voice again, that frown she had on her face had disappeared.]

Wait for it...

And, 3, 2, 1--

WAIT!

[Shiki grinned, leading Rhyme back to the merchant.]

Soooo~ [She beams at the poor man trying to make a sale.] Let's try this again. You'll sell us that watch for XXX DPs.

Very well--

And! And, you should throw in something special! Right, Rhyme?

[Beat decides to play along. He may have been disappointed to find out that Rhyme still didn't remember who he was. But if he was honest to himself, he was just glad that she was around, that he was able to see her again even if it was in Somarium.]

C'mon. They this way.

[He leads her towards a few stalls down, weaving through the crowd until they reached it. There are a few lockets and pendants that were hanging from this particular stall, some similar to the pendant Beat had given Rhyme back in Shibuya.]

Those. [Pointing towards them.] She's the type to wear pendants like 'em.

[Rhyme tries not to laugh as she nods her head. She doesn't want to say anything in case she messes up Shiki's plan. She feels a little bad for the merchant, but it's fun to watch her friend at work.]

[spaztastic]

[It's kinda scary to see how far Shiki would go for a bargain. Shiki pouts at the merchant, patting Rhyme on the head.]

Look at her. She's sooo cute! I'd feel really bad if she got really nasty sunburn, right?

... W-well, I suppose--

So she should have a cute hat! Right~?

I'll... I'll see what I have.

Would you? Aww, you're so nice! Thanks~ Isn't he nice, Rhyme?

[And then Shiki played the poor merchant like a Stradivarius 8Db]

[Rhyme follows Beat through the crowd and tries her best not to get separated. Once or twice she forgets that people can actually see them now, and is also surprised by how much larger Beat's back is.

When they reach the stall, her eyes widen significantly and she reaches for the absent pendant on her chest. It's an accessory her brother gave her. She dropped it before being erased and brought here, and she really misses it. It's a significant number of seconds before she remembers she's with Beat.]

...They look great! Are you getting any of them?

[Before he can even answer her though, Rhyme's eyes drift back on their own towards the pendant that looks closes to her old one.]

[Beat had seen Rhyme reach for the pendant that should have been around her neck. He frowns at the gesture but he holds his tongue as best he could from commenting on it.]

I still ain't sure. I dunno if I can really give it to her.

[With a shake of a head, he looks back at the pendants once more then back to Rhyme.]

'Bout you? See somethin' you like?

[ cue Nai shaking his head back and forth! the comment brings down his mood another notch, but at least he's managing to not cry. ]

N-Not right now, b-but... There's always a chance Tsukumo will be here one day...!

derp. Beat would know. Sorry! /flails

[Rhyme immediately points at the bell-pendant, before lowering her hand sheepishly when she realizes how excited she must seem.]

It looks like the one my brother gave to me. I dropped it when I got...erased.

[She frowns.]

If I make it back to the RG, I wonder if he'll get mad. It's a really rare item back home.

[ooc: And /flails some more. I just got your comment in my inbox. Sorry!!]

[He doesn't even miss a beat as he starts defending himself — as Rhyme's brother.]

I'm sure he ain't gonna be mad! Ain't like you lost it on purpose, right? An' you definitely gonna see him again. [He manages a reassuring smile.] Count on it.

[Rhyme smiles back tentatively. Beat might be hot-headed, but he's kind-hearted and optimistic. That's why she doesn't have the heart to remind him that she already lost the Game. She likes to think that she'll get back to the RG from Somarium, but knows there's a very small chance of that.]

Um...do you think I should get it? It's not the same, but I've gotten used to wearing that pendant. I miss its weight, I guess.

[They hadn't talked, not about what happened afterwards yet. It was hard for Beat to simply treat her as if she was just his partner but it had to do for now.]

If you still ain't sure 'bout it... What if I get it for ya instead?

Oh! No, Beat! There's no way I can let you do that!

Naw, it's fine, yo! Think a' it like a welcomin' gift or somethin'.

[And just to prove that he's serious about it, he looks over to the peddler and points to the one Rhyme had been eyeing the entire time.]

Yo, how much you sellin' that one for?

[Rhyme gasps and grabs the arm Beat is using to point at the pendant. She moves on muscle memory and misses-- Beat is a lot taller than she remembers too. Rhyme tries again and succeeds the second time.]

You don't have to buy it!

[They've been walking around the festival for awhile now and Rhyme has noticed that most of the items are a little overpriced. At least, as much as she can tell.]

C'mon, it's aight, Rhyme.

[He had money to spare anyway. And even if Rhyme didn't think they were related, he still wanted to get something for her.]

[She sighs and then reluctantly lets go.

(Odd how it feels so familiar to do that, even though she's only grabbed Beat's arm a few times in the Game...)]

[He takes out his wallet and pays the stall owner his set price. It may have been a little steep but Beat didn't seem to care about it.

Finally taking the pendant of the hook it hung from, he thanked the peddler before handing it over to Rhyme.]

[Rhyme takes the pendant and quickly puts it on, sighing and smiling slightly as the restored weight. She fondly looks down at the pendant for a few seconds, before turning back to Beat and beaming at him.]
